Banneret is a game of miniatures warfare in the period 1000 to 1500 AD, covering armies of Europe and the Mediterranean. The scale of representation is intended to be between 50 and 200 men per figure. The 50:1 scale is appropriate for the smaller battles of western Europe, such as Hastings or Poitiers; the 200:1 scale is more appropriate for the larger battles of eastern Europe and the Mediterranean, such as Nicopolis or Ankara. It is assumed that players will be using 15mm figures on a table roughly 5' by 3' (5' by 3'6" is recommended). An attempt has been made to make the basing of figures as compatible as possible with the more popular 15mm rules systems that cover this period.

These rules cover the age of chivalric warfare, and chivalry is often closely associated in literature and in the gaming world with magic and fantasy as well. For those as attracted to the armies of Camelot or Gondor as any historical army, a supplement for fantasy games has been included. These include mythological and magical troops, sorcerers, and battle magic.
